James Miller Russell is a 27 year old electronic music composer and visual artist. He currently lives and works in the Illawarra as an artist in residence at Wollongong’s Art Gallery. He releases music and visual art under the name Astrophysical Maser. He creates compositions of a wide variety of electronic genres with Ableton Live – ranging from experimental ambient healing noise music performances, to banging techno thumpers
He approaches digital music composition with the mindset of a sculptor and/or painter.
Seeing the abyss of silence as an untapped block of marble – he approaches it and generates out of space and time what he can.
He has studied Composition and Audio Engineering at the Australian Institute of Music, as well as Ancient History at the University of Wollongong.
His latest artistic venture Astrophysical Maser - is a music and visual art project focused on the conscious blending of technology and nature - his debut EP Bird and Planet was released in February 2018 through the legendary Sydney based techno label Motorik Records.
He has recently released an album of compositions written in the vein of game, app and film soundtracks - it can be listened to on Spotify, and Soundcloud.
James is inspired by the world and universe around and in him, as well as the incredible technological advancments of modern times. In the long term he wants to pivot his practice and performances to creating multi-sensory experiences, with the use and aid of advancing digital technologies
